IRS Extends Individual Tax Filing Date to May 17, 2021

IRS Extends Individual Tax Filing Date to May 17, 2021

March 18, 2021

On March 17, 2021, the IRS announced that it was extending the federal income tax filing due date for individuals from April 15, 2021 to May 17, 2021. The announcement is here.

Note that the extension also extends the time for paying any 2020 federal income tax payments otherwise due on April 15. Taxpayers do not need to file any extension request in connection with the extended due date. If taxpayers need additional time to file 2020 individual returns, then they can file Form 4686 which extends the filing date to October 15, 2021. The IRS Notice also makes clear that any 2021 estimated tax payments are still due on April 15, 2021.

We await news from the Illinois Department of Revenue on whether IDOR will extend the Illinois filing and payment dates to sync with new federal dates.
